COMPOSER NOTES
An introductory quote from the traditional O Holy Night by Adolphe Adam begins the work, which then immediately changes key and direction. The opening accompaniment figure is a 4/4 variation from the original compound meter. The rest of the work features new melodic and harmonic treatment of the familiar lyrics. Orchestral instrumentation includes harp, strings and piano which then transitions into a more contemporary "feel" and includes atmospheric textures, bass, handbells and shaker. A final melodic nod to Adam’s original closes the piece.

“O HOLY NIGHT” is a single release from pianist/composer Matt Johnson that features Heidi Enders’ vocals with orchestration by Johnson. Johnson created a new version of this Christmas classic with a more contemporary melody composed in 4/4 time rather than the original 12/8 rhythm. This release includes two verses with the original lyrics (based on John Sullivan Dwight’s version of Placide Cappeau’s poem, “Minuit, Chretiens”). It begins with a nod to the original song and then quickly moves to the new melody. Enders’ lovely voice is expressive and clear, and the orchestration includes harp, strings, piano, atmospheric textures, handbells and bass. It’s a beautiful and evocative update of a beloved Christmas carol and will make a very welcome addition to your holiday music collection!
Matt Johnson offers free downloads of all of his music on his website, and there are several recorded versions of “O HOLY NIGHT.” One features three verses and there are several accompaniment tracks as well in either the key of A or Db. Sheet music is also available in both keys and includes the vocal part with piano accompaniment, just the vocal part, the lyrics and a lead sheet.
