Album Review: Silent Night (single)

“Silent Night” is a new single release by Matt Johnson and is different from his 2014 single, “The NEW Silent Night,” which includes vocals. This arrangement has no vocals and features keyboards (mostly piano, but there are other sounds as well - strings, bells and a few other instruments). The melody is supported by a swiftly-flowing left hand pattern. Rhythms and harmonies are not always what you would expect, making the piece very interesting and different from most traditional arrangements of this well-worn nugget that often becomes the centerpiece of the music of Christmas. Quoting Matt’s website: “This soothing piano arrangement of ‘Silent Night’ swirls with Matt’s jazzy reharmonizations. Light instrumental assistance frames the imaginative melodic renderings and fluid piano accompaniment.” It’s a beautiful arrangement that emphasizes the peace and serenity of the Christmas season.
